Look what came in the mail.
I was recently given the opportunity to interview Chiodos’ new frontman Brandon Bolmer. I got to ask him a few things about the bands new album illuminaudio, tour life, and a little about himself and his interests.
What was the writing process like and what was your inspiration for Illuminaudio? Did you feel any pressure trying to keep the same kind of sound and theatrical feel from the previous records?
Musically, the writing process was about 50-60% finished when I joined the band. Vocally, there wasn’t much. So, I was really given the freedom to write most of my own melodies and lyrics, although Brad did help with some of that. There was a little pressure when it came to writing for me, just because I wanted the old fans to like what we were creating. At the end of the day, all I could do was relax, write what I felt, and let the rest take care of itself. I can’t please everyone, so the only thing I could do was be myself and hope it went over well, and I think it did. :)
What does the album title Illuminaudio mean?
Well, the band’s definition would be something like, “…an enlightening soundscape,” or “…sounds created with the intention of guiding, helping, or assisting one through adversity”. There’s a lot of speculation that makes it seem like something to do with the Illuminati, but it’s not. However, I will say that there are some songs on the record that have to do with the man in the suit and tie.
Any major differences that you had to get used to from being in a smaller band (Yesterdays Rising) to Chiodos? Touring, fans, etc.
When I was in Yesterdays Rising, I was very involved and took care of a lot of the business and networking. This band has a solid team of people working for them, and at first I didn’t like it, I felt like things were out of my control, but at the end of the day it’s kind of nice to only have to worry about my voice, my performance, and my writing. Other than that, maybe just getting used to a busier schedule, more touring, more interviews, and videos.
Chiodos in the past has had rather creative song titles, which held special meanings in relation to something. Like the title “If I Cut My Hair, Hawaii Will Sink” was named when Matt Goddard drunkenly spoke the words to the other band members and the song “One Day Women Will All Become Monsters” is a reference to Shakespeare’s play King Lear. Any of that on Illuminaudio?
Maybe not as much, but a little bit. Although it was changed a bit, “Love Is A Cat From Hell” is a Bukowski reference, Brad is a big fan. I find it hard to write such a serious message and name it something funny, so the whole “kookie/funny track title” thing was lost a little bit when I joined. “Let Us Burn One” is a smoking reference, “His Story Repeats Itself” is a cool play on words, and “Those Who Slay Together, Stay Together” was taken from “A family that prays together, stays together” and altered to better fit our zombie plot.
I hear you’re an artist and into graphic design, want to tell us more about your inspirations for art and some of your favorite artists?
Yes, yes. I am a graphic design artist/photo manipulator, and I occasionally pick up a brush and paint. Inspiration can come from many sources…things like my environment/nature, conspiracy, abstract art, technology, and other artists. Some of my favorite artists are Salvador Dali, Greg “Craola” Simkins, and Daniel Merriam. I’ve got a lot of talented friends as well; one of them is Steven Van. I’m working with him right now on some new pieces, we’ll be selling prints online for anyone interested. It’s a really cool process. My art is mostly digital, so what we’ve done is taken my digital photo manipulation, printed it 18×24, then Steven strategically paints an 18×24 canvas, so that after it’s dry, he image transfers my print onto his painting using a wheat paste-like process, then once that’s dry, he takes a spray bottle of water, and rubs off my print’s paper with his thumb, leaving the ink from my work, and all of his paint showing through it. It’s really quite an interesting process. I’m excited about it…and we’ve got plenty of that coming.
What do you think you’d be doing if you weren’t in a band?
Music and art ’til death do us part. So, if I wasn’t in a band, I’d be working on solo music, and some form of art. Nothing else makes me happy.
Do you still play any of the old Chiodos songs live?
Yea, we play a few of the more requested ones. Our set is about 50-50 old and new.
So now you’re in Chiodos and made a debut album with you as the vocalist. What’s in store for us in the future now that we’ve all gotten used to the change?
It’s hard to say what’s next. I know we’re planning to do another video for a track off of Illuminaudio, but from here I guess you can expect to see the band get a little more comfortable and make some risky moves with music and creation. I’d like to see this band take on a more of an artsy approach.
When you’re about to perform live, do you have any rituals you like to do to prepare?
Yea, I drink a special tea made from plants in the mountains of Japan, and I do yoga haha, only kidding. But seriously, nothing crazy…sometimes I jog in place to get my body warmed up, and I always do vocal warm ups. Sometimes I’ll take a shot of Makers Mark if I’m not feeling too snazzy.
Being on tour with so many well-known bands like blessthefall, Architects, Endless Hallway, and Atreyu, have you learned anything from them that you use when you’re performing your own shows?
